Black Currant Seed Oil

Evening primrose oil (EPO), black currant seed oil, and borage oil contain gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that the body converts to a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin. This hormone like substance has anti-inflammatory properties and may also act as a blood thinner and blood vessel dilator. GLA’s, the main ingredient found within Evening primrose oil, has been known to have anti-cancer effects in studies.

Many of the health benefits of Evening primrose oil are as follows: EPO’s may help improve some cases of diabetes, relieve breast pain by reducing the sensitivity of breast cells to estrogen, relieve chronic eczema via reducing inflammatory prostaglandins and the dilation of capillaries on the skin, and it may help in some PMS associated situations.

It is known that people with diabetes have difficulty converting omega-6 oils into GLA, thus making supplementation helpful. Over prolonged periods of time, a lack of GLA and its metabolites decreases the flow of blood and oxygen to the nerve cells, which tend to bring about unhealthy conditions. Mainly due to the fact that essential fatty acids play a key role in the building healthy structure of cell membranes, a lack of this vital nutrient can cause much harm. A diet rich in EFA’s is always a healthy choice.
