CATNIP or CATNEP

(Nepeta cataria; LABIATAE)

 

Part used:  Herb, leaves

 

Therapeutic action:

Aromatic, relaxant, diffusive, stimulant, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, antispasmodic, nervine, sedative, carminative, anodyne, refrigerant, antacid.

 

Medicinal uses:

Convulsions, restlessness, hysteria, chlorosis, colic, amenorrhea, toothache, nervous headache, flatulence, deranged stomach, spasms, prevent griping, insanity, fevers, fits, expel worms, suppressed urination,  colds.

 

Preparation:

Fluid extract, infusion, powder, tincture. Never boil catnip, as much of the therapeutic value is in the volatile oil.
