EUROPEAN CENTAURY

(Erythraea centaurium; GENTIANACEAE)

 

Part used:

Whole herb (or variously; leaves, top, root).

 

Therapeutic action:

Tonic, aromatic bitter, stomachic, febrifuge, antiperiodic antiseptic.

 

This herb is an excellent general tonic and is a strengthener of the heart; it acts upon the liver in correcting and regulating an over secretion of bile. Its therapeutic action is similar to gentian (Gentiana lutea) and chirata (Swertia chirata).

 

Medicinal uses:

Ague, anemia, debility (delicate and elderly persons), dyspepsia, fevers, freckles, gout, jaundice, liver troubles, stomach problems.

 

Preparation:

Fluid extract, infusion, powder, tincture.
