Psyllium
is probably the most widely used mucilaginous herb today. This herb has been
used historically as a bulk laxative, which increases the volume of the
intestinal contents. This physical movement stimulates peristaltic action in
the bowel. Both the hulls and the seed swell when It comes in contact with
water. Bulk laxatives are popular with the group of people over 50 years old,
who live more sedentary lives. They tend to require more assistance with
peristaltic action of the bowel. Psyllium is useful when combating chronic
yeast infections, high blood pressure, coughing, or when treating bloody
urine or when a diuretic is needed. |
