HOLLYHOCK

(Althaea rosea; MALVACEAE)

Part used:  Flowers, leaves and roots.

 

Therapeutic action:

Emollient, demulcent, and diuretic

 

Hollyhock has a therapeutic action and use similar to marshmallow (Althea officinalis), but it is not quite as mucilaginous.  It is very beneficial in chest and bronchial complaints, and it is especially soothing to the mucous membrane.  It has a marked influence on the kidneys, bladder and urinary organs.

 

Medicinal uses:

Bronchial troubles, inflammation of the bladder, etc.

 

Preparation:

Fluid extract, infusion, powder, and tincture.
