MALE FERN or FILIX-MAS or BEAR'S PAW ROOT

(Dryopteris Filix-mas; Aspidium Filix-mas; D. marginalis; FILICES; POLYPODIACEAE)

Parts used:  Root (rhizome and stipes).

Therapeutic action:

Anthelmintic (taeniafuge, vermifuge), astringent, tonic, vulnerary.    Many species of Polypodium have been sold as "American Aspidium" with disappointing results, but the European Aspidium will rarely, if ever, fail where one is after worms.

Medicinal uses:

Expel worms (tape, round, seat or pin), wounds, rickets.

Preparation:

Fluid extract, infusion, oil, oleo-resin, powder, tincture. The fluid extract is prepared freshly as the root deteriorates rapidly, usually becoming greatly reduced in potency within 1-2 years.
